Ngarot





Ngarot is a traditional festival from Lelea, West Java. This is an annual festival that held before the planting season of rice. Ngarot is a sign or symbol to tell villagers that it is the time to plant rice on the rice field. The first rice plant to be planted will be on the head of village’s rice field which named as carik.There are many interesting things on Ngarot festival based on its’ history, meaning and how it is celebrated.
First, from the historical background, Ngarot is from Sundanese language which means “drink”. The festival first celebrated was in a long time ago when the village was led by Ki Ngawi and became the culture and annual event to celebrate in Lelea village until now.
Then, from it is meaning, Ngarot now becoming the big festival that is a form of gratefulness of the villagers for welcoming the plant season. In the past villagers will gather in the village’s hall and will present their harvesting result to be enjoyed together among the villagers. Now, the festival is bigger it is not only a gather among the villagers anymore, it is becoming big cultural festival that serve many entertaining events. There are many entertaining vehicle such as carousel and many more. There are also many stands that sell many productsfrom household stuff, food and beverages until clothes stand.
The last one is how Ngarot celebrated. There are three main part of Ngarot that are parade, seserahan, and the show. Parade is the presents of young male and female from Lelea village to walk around the village wear the traditional dress of Lelea. The seserahan which is the villagers give their harvest result to the Villages stuff and is the form of gratefulness to the God. Last one the show is the final of the festival, it is held every 3rd week of December every year.
In conclusion, Ngarot is a traditional festival which held in Lelea, West Java. The purpose of this festival is as a form of the gratefulness of the villagers of welcoming the plant season. From the festival we know that even the festival is holdevery year in the 3rd of December.
